Dan,

Sorry to hear you've been unwell, but great to see you've got it sorted now.

Thanks,SendOfJive.

When you say to "disable remote access in the router", is that meant to be a "general" statement or do you mean it's an actual feature that I can disable in the router dashboard?

The rest is crystal clear.  Thanks, again.

Look in the root of the drives for a file called "Bootsect.dos".  The root of the drives is when you open the drive but do not enter any folders.  It may be under C:\bootsect.dos or E:\Bootsect.dos

If you had a bootable version of DOS when you installed either windows 2000 or XP, that file would have been created and thats what the 200/XP boot loader uses to boot DOS or windows 95/98

You can't add DOS based versions of windows to the boot.ini file directly like with 200 or XP.  The boot.ini file needs to load a bootsec.dos file that in turn starts DOS.

What is the 16MB FAT partition?

As for the CD Rom drive, I'm assuming you must have other programs in DOS because I don't know what good a CD-Rom will do for partition magic.

But I think the most common driver is Oakcdrom.sys  If you have or can get a hold of a windows 98 boot disk try that driver.

You will need to add it into the config.sys file just like the other driver is listed.

Autoexec.bat and config, sys are hidden system files, you need to change your view settings to show all files and to unhide system files in order to see it.

How often do you need to boot to DOS?

If you really want to add it to the XP boot menu I outlined about 4 different ways to do in in this topic here:

http://community.norton.com/t5/Other-Norton-Products/Norton-Ghost-15-clone-drive-with-dual-boot-XP-and-Norton-Ghost/td-p/859360

That person was using XP embedded and because it didn't have a lot of the standard files and runtimes of "real" XP it took several options before one would work on his system.

But each and every one worked on my regular XP system.

I think the easiest may have been the last one I suggested on the second to last page using debug.exe  (also from a windows 98 boot disk and you may already have that in DOS 6.22

You don't need to use a boot disk since you have DOS installed and bootable, you just need to put the files in the DOS partition and boot it.

If you decide to go that route, ask any questions you want first and I would not suggest making any changes unless you have your system backed up or  you have a way to recover the XP boot if necessary.

All my examples in that topic are using one hard drive with XP and DOS partitions.  It's going to be a little different using 2 hard drives like you have.

It's an actual feature that allows you to log into the router setup screens from the internet.  Obviously, if the router can't be accessed from outside, your network will be safer.

Thanks Dave.  I'll study the options outlined in the thread you offer.

The 16 MB FAT partition is the "Data" drive that shows up in both DOS and XP.  I use it to transfer data between operating systems (program outputs like graphs or tables).

I really have only one program left that requires DOS (and a parallel port security key).  It is the electronic filter design program S/FILSYN.  The good news:  An XP version of that program was recently released to the public domain. I'll get a copy of that -- so my future visits to DOS will be much less frequent.  That said, I can probably live with the CMOS setup method of booting DOS from now on.

Still, I would like to get DOS booting and working correctly, including CD/DVD.  Who knows when I might want to grab some legacy DOS/Win3.1 game CD and play around?  Could there be a motherboard BIOS problem running the old DOS CD driver?

On the AUTOEXEC.BAT file:  It's funny that it would appear hidden/system when viewed from XP but not from DOS.  It's just an open/editable ascii text file there.  Wasn't there something about BootMagic requiring entries in AUTOEXE2 instead of AUTOEXEC.BAT?  The DOS drive is from a system that had BootMagic installed but it is set to inactive now.  Why can't I uninstall PartitionMagic/BootMagic from DOS?  I get that error message listed in previous post.

It's been so many years since I used bootmagic I don't remember much about it.

But Partition Magic and a lot of other DOS based tools used a AUTOEXE2 file when it took more than one floppy disk to use the program.  In PM it's used to load the DOS drivers, CD-Rom, SCSI, USB, etc.

The reason for that is the same autoexec.bat file can be used on both floppies.  There is a line saying something like:

if exist call autoexe2.bat.

So on the first floppy the file would exist to load the drivers, once you swap it out for the second floppy you don't want the drivers to load again so that file would be missing (not exist) and the bat file would continue on without reloading drivers.

The file attributes and view settings between DOS and XP are a little different so just because a file is visible in DOS does not necessarily mean it's visible in XP.

Since you have a need to boot DOS more often than just to run PM, it's really not too difficult to set it up that way.

The only "Danger" in trying to set it up is that it's possible to loose the ability to boot XP.  You can get "stuck" with only being able to boot DOS until you restore the XP boot by using a tool or booting to the XP disk and using the recovery console to run a "fixboot".

I can't remember but one of the 4 tools I used in the other thread did that.

If you have a "bootsec.dos" file somewhere (most likely on the XP partition or wherever "boot.ini" is located) you can add the DOS boot by adding a line to boot.ini:

C:\BOOTSECT.DOS="Boot DOS"

You can even leave out the name of the file because XP will automatically look for a file by the name of bootsect.dos

C:\="whatever you want the menu to say"

(Took me years to figure out how that worked because I had no idea it would automatically look for bootsect.dos).

The bootsect.dat file is a hex dump of the boot sector of the partition you want to boot. Also known as the "Volume Boot Record".  It's the first 512 bytes of the partition you want to boot.

The problem encountered is that it contains partition information and so if the partition is changed or resized it becomes invalid and the partition won't boot anymore until a updated bootsec.dos is made.

That was a very common problem with dual booting windows 98 and XP.  People would use PM to resize the '98 partition and all of a sudden it would not boot until it was fixed by generating a new bootsec, dos file.

Exactly how I learned to do this LOL

So it's really not too dificult and I think the second to last post on that previous topic may be the easiest.

Put debug.exe on the DOS partition if it is not already there.  Boot DOS and use the steps I gave to generate the bootsec.dos file.

Back in XP, move the file to the XP partition and add the line to the boot, ini file for it.

That way does not mess with the XP boot at all but it's always a good idea to be prepared and have a way to restore the XP boot just in case.

BTW- a little off topic but.

I got this point of sale system that also uses a security dongle in a parallel port.

An addon card will not work and I don't have to tell you how impossible it is becoming to find motherboards with a parallel port.

The people who make it were trying to hold me hostage and wanted me to pay a couple thousand to trade my dongle for a USB one.  I picked up 2 older but unused motherboards and CPU's from ebay while I still could.

I am currently running Norton thru my ISP century link and have purchased antitheft seperatly It  has been one night mare after another when I bought a new laptop with win 8.1 first ill stick to the anti theft location issue it works well with my celphones because It uses gps but the computers keep tracking about 5 miles away assuming this is the telco CO I have registerd ma wifi and computers with skyhook and it worked for a couple of weeks I was told to activate gps in my computers called manafactues they said there is no gps chips in them so what dose one do?

Hi,
Basically anti theft tracking works based on GPS hardware on the device. The GPS chips are rarely attached to a laptop or desktop by factory default. Usually if no GPS devices are found in a system, then IP Address location based tracking is done( either by Wi-Fi connection or by LAN, it depends on ISP). I suppose this creates the 5 mile range for you. If you need more accurate location, you may need to attach an external GPS device to your laptop.

How can I download Norton Utilities to a second computer?

Hi.

In 2011, I bought Norton Utilities for using with 3 computers. I've just bought a second computer, but can't find a way to download Utilities from my Norton Account.

Unlike my Norton Internet Security, it isn't shown in "My Products" but it is listed in my order history.

Any advice would be very welcome.

Many thanks.

Norton Bootable Recovery Tool CD - how to permanently put a serial on the CD?

Is there any way how to permanently put a serial on Norton Bootable Recovery CD, so I don't have to enter the serial on every boot from CD?

Re: PartitionMagic prevents boot

Ha!  That's not off topic at all.  I've had the dongle problem since DOS6.22 was replaced by NT, then Win2000, then XP, and then Win7 on various computers.  Even though I was always careful to get motherboard parallel ports, the dongle doesn't work with anything past DOS6.22 (hence my DOS boot effort on this machine).  I don't know if modern operating systems handle the parallel port differently or if it's just a processor speed thing  --  but something confuses the dongle until I boot into DOS.

Anyway, I hope to get rid of the dongle completely now that the program is released to public domain.  I've already got it working on a couple of Win7 and one XP machine (this one).  For some reason, the progran won't run on one other XP machine; complaining that MSVCR71.DLL is  missing.  I think I'll let the XP install disk setup do a system repair on that one.

I'm still planning to look at your method #4 so I can enter DOS (and hopefully load my CD/DVD drivers) from the boot window though.

Hi,

I doubt it. Suspect that it is part of the security for the product.

Error #88 unable to find correct drive - Partition Magic 6.0

$

I have a Dell desktop operating with Power Quest Partition Magic 6.0 with two (2) partitions.  I have two(2)  bottable disks and one rescue (1) disk that I have tried to use.  To date I have not been successfull.  I have encountered at least four (4) different error codes during my trials to get this to work.  The bootable disks issued error message #88 unable to find correct drive and #8 could not run Partition Magic.  The rescue disk error message was#8108.  None of the error message can be found in the product manual that came with the software.

I have been able to boot the PC with a bootable disk for Win 98.  It creates a RAMdrive C:\ only with CD rom support.  Any help or hope for my situation????
