I have a Dell desktop operating with Power Quest Partition Magic 6.0 with two (2) partitions.  I have two(2)  bottable disks and one rescue (1) disk that I have tried to use.  To date I have not been successfull.  I have encountered at least four (4) different error codes during my trials to get this to work.  The bootable disks issued error message #88 unable to find correct drive and #8 could not run Partition Magic.  The rescue disk error message was#8108.  None of the error message can be found in the product manual that came with the software.

I have been able to boot the PC with a bootable disk for Win 98.  It creates a RAMdrive C:\ only with CD rom support.  Any help or hope for my situation????

Partition Magic is no longer supported.  It sounds like you have SATA drives.  From the rescue disk it runs in DOS and DOS has very limited driver support for SATA.

It also does not understand the sector alignment that windows 7 uses and cannot support drives larger than (I think) 1.5TB

Search for "Partition Wizzard".  They offer a free version for home use and it works the same way PM did.

They also have a free bootable CD, we always reccomend aking changes to the partitions "outside" of windows.

Always backup your data before any partition work.

Dick, Powerquest was bought by Symantec.along with Partition Magic and Drive Image.

Drive Image became the consumer version of Ghost.

MSVCR71.DLL is a Visual C++ runtime file.

I can't remember if it is installed along with .net framework 1.1 or the Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package.

But it really does not need to be installed,  On the working system you should have it in the Windows\System32 folder.

Put a copy of that file in the other XP system thats complaining and it should work fine.

Anti theft products rely on GPS installed on your device. If you have no GPS, they will try to use the IP address assigned to your computer/internet connection. Your friend may have a static IP address that never changes and would always be able to point to the physical location of the device. If your ISP does not give you a static IP address, it will change every time you establish an internet connection. Even if you use a router, the IP address may change every so often, so no one IP can be associated with your house. Those would show up as belonging to the CO as you say.

If stolen, your laptop could still be traced to some extent if the Police are able to get a warrant for the information from the ISP about the IP address assigned to the stolen laptop. Even though the IP address is assigned to you temporarily, the ISP is still logging who is getting the IP.

Hi Dick

Thanks very much for your advice, but all that has done is give me is a month's trial, after which I have to pay the full subscription. I already paid for installing the program in 3 computers in 2011.

Can anyone offer some sensible solution?

Many thanks.

If you have a 3 device license you can use that key to activate the trail into one of your full licenses.

Hi GordonK,

Try this: go to https://manage.norton.com/ , Sign In, click on "My Account", and have a look under either "Product Details" or "Order History", and if still valid then hopefully you'll find what you're looking for under one of those two.

Laurence

I have NU 16 installed and activated, but I do not see it listed in my products in Norton Management. Do you see it in your Norton Management?

The last I remember of that situation is that the subscriptions are listed but the licenses are not. Not sure if there's been a change to that policy or not.

Your license only covers the version it was purchased for.

It's not like NIS or NAV Dick, it's versio specific for Norton Utilities.

Obviously it is not version 16, that came out after 2011.

Version 15

Version 15

http://www.norton.com/nu14

Check the version on your working system and make sure that version supports the operating system of your new computer.

Thanks Dave-

I figured that out and put the file in Windows\System32.  The missing file error disappeared but now the program just crashes with "The program has encountered an error and needs to close".  The machine that runs OK has 2GB ram and the one that crashes is only a 1GB Pentium III box.  But I doubt that has anything to do with this small program,  I suspect a problem with the XP installation on the Pentium machine..

I'm considering an "upgrade in place" system repair with a XP-slipstreamed-SP3 boot disk.

Cannot uninstall Anti-theft

My wife has a new Toshiba laptop with Windows 8, that has since been upgraded to 8.1. It came with Norton's products installed. I have removed the AV and internet security, but am unable to remove the anti-theft program. I have tried to uninstall it in safe mode and it will not let me.

We never registered the product. I go into control panel, programs, and look for the anti theft. I click on it and select uninstall. The program opens, and the box says that it is initializing. After approximately 3-4 minutes it is asking for a user name and password. These were never created.

How do I get this off the laptop?

Sorry I have not experience with Anti-Theft, but I assume this behaviour is by design. If a thief gets your system, you do not want them to be able to disable/uninstall the program.

You may be able to get some help from online Support. At least they may be able to have some way to verify your ownership of the laptop and the program. Then, they may be able to offer you a solution to uninstall the product.

If you have not activated or registered the product, it should not be running and you could probably just ignore it. It would not affect system performance.

Hi,

While installing NIS, was any particular Norton Account used to make the purchase. If yes, please try using the Norton Account and password to uninstall NAT. Let know if it was successful.
