Re: Norton Disk Doctor won't see laptop hardrive connected via USB

Sorry but it's going to cost you another blank CD.

NO laughing from the peanut gallery here because the easiest way to write the correct XP MBR is with a Windows 98 boot disk.

I'm dead serious, I know the user is running XP and I know that DOS can't access a NTFS partition but like I said, I have done this many many times.

I even have a boot disk ISO already uploaded from the last person who needed to do this.

This is one of my SkyDrive accounts, download "W98Boot.iso" Right click and download.

https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=7245CB5F0CB0F60E%21115

Burn it to a CD like you did with the other ISO.  Don't be concerned that you don't see anything on the disk, the floppy image is in the boot sector of the CD where you can't see it.

Boot the system with it, on the first menu arrow down and select option #2 "Boot From CD-Rom"

Next screen arrow down and select option #3 "Start Computer Without CD-ROM drivers"

At the A> prompt, type: fdisk /mbr

You susually will not see anything happen unless you hit an error.

When it returns to the A> prompt wait a couple seconds for good measure, remove the CD and restart the system by holding down the CTRL and ALT buttons while pressing Delete

Did Windows boot?

Hi surendran_p,

Thank you for your help!

With "ipconfig /all" under "Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection" it says "DHCP Enabled...: Yes".

To add the drivers I tried: The network card is "NVIDIA nForce 10/100" and I could not find it on the NVIDIA website. It's probably too old? So, I went to the hardware manager, looked up the location of the driver files. I copied them to some directory, which I used at the USB creation to add drivers. Should that work?

Is there anything I can check in the WinPE terminal concerning the network connection?

Welcome,

Maybe rebooting and trying again will fix the problem - wherever it might be

Welcome,

What is your operating system? Also, any other details you think that the team might be able to use to determine what and where the problem occurs.

Keep us posted

Hi ,

I'm wondering if it is because NU14 is no longer supported?

,

You may like to contact Customer Support to check your activation key is OK.  www.norton.com/chat

good question. Since they are licensed products and not subscription based it is possible that now that NU16 is current support for NU14 has ceased. Sounds like we need an answer from one of the team members who knows the score. Let's start with  and see what happens.

Followed everything, booted to W98, did fdisk /mbr, no errors, reboot, hangs with the blinking cursor in upper left, it looks like the top left character.  I am thinking it does indeed have a virus or malware that is not detected when scanning it via USB on my other computer with AVG. Thoughts?

Sorry that didn't work, it may be the boot sector instead of the MBR.

I don't think anyone can make a determination about if the system is infected or not.  From what I have seen so far I would say no because the problem you had loosing the partition seems like more of an accident then something deliberate because only partial information defining the partition was lost.  The MBR, partition table, and boot sector are all in the first few sectors on the hard drive and whatever caused a problem there could have been caused by several things.

If you have a XP installation disk you can write a new boot sector by entering the rcovery console and typing "FixBoot" and "FixMBR" again.

Do you have a XP installation disk?

I ran MBAM on my second machine and it located and quarantined a trojan horse named "AUTOKMS."

...and regarding the MBAM log entry C:\Windows\AutoKMS\AutoKMS.exe (Trojan.AutoKMS) -> No action taken from message # 11, that program is usually associated with a key generator used to activate illegal copies of MS Office - see the thread here on the MS Answers forum and additional information here on File.net.

Since MBAM only generated a warning and did not remove this file, you can submit the file for a SHA256 hash tag analysis at VirusTotal as long as AutoKMS.exe is smaller than 64 MB.  A high detection rate with VirusTotal would indicate that a wide variety of AV software considers the file to be unsafe/malicious.

Laptop is a Dell, I have a Dell Reinstallation CD, Windows XP Professional including Service Pack 2.  When I boot to recovery console, it asks for Administrator password, never used one on the laptop, tried multiple different ones with no luck. Downloaded ophcrack and tables, no admin password cracked.

Have my full install Windows XP Professional, boot to recovery, goes to C:>, type in fixboot says "FIXBOOT cannot find the system drive, or the drive specified is not valid."

bootcfg /scan "Error: Failed to succcessfully [NOTE three letter C in the word!!] scan disks for Windows installations. This error may be caused by a corrupt file system, which would prevent Bootcfg from successfully scanning. Use chkdsk to detect any disk errors."

chkdsk "The volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems."

Help!!! I am about to tell my buddy to go buy another laptop and I will help him upgrade all of his old apps to latest. I have proven I did get a good backup of his data before the hard drive went wacko. Thoughts?

I don't like the way your getting different results.

After you recovered the partition you were able to access the drive normally and even run a AV scan on all the files.

Now your back to getting errors on the drive.

I think you have the best idea, you may not need a new laptop though, maybe you can recover with the Dell disk and run some diagnostics on the drive.

Also keep in mind support ends for XP in April anyway, you may want to move him forward now.

I'm very sorry your still having problems but at least you got the important data back, thats the irreplaceable part, reinstalling is just a matter of spending a lot of time.

Hi, borgencer. This is a known issue, and Symantec are working on a fix. No time frame as yet

It doesn't affect your protection and you can hide them, if they bother you in the meantime.

One thing that CAN work is to set your Boot Time Protection to Normal or Aggressive. The default is off.

Settings/Computer/Real Time Protection. I have mine set to Aggressive. That way Norton loads before other programs.

Hi Umarc,

If you add those network drivers when you create bootable USB then it should work. Please post your observations after you do the same.

Happy to help!
