Re: Some Norton files have suddenly stopped defragmenting

Hi jbwnor.

Thanks for your comments, it is comforting to know that someone else is experierencing the same phenomenon. Perhaps one of the Norton team might care to comment. I'm not particularly concerned by the change if there is a rational explination and it is not  indicative of a harmfull condition.

Hi Jan,

I haven't seen any announcements but if it's like the last time a number of questions about the new protocol were asked the response was that when it became more widely used / accepted it would be supported.

Stay tuned. Changes are made every day. Til then

I'm trying to decide whether or not to optimize a drive and boot time: w/ restore points?

Hello, I have Norton Utilities 15.0 and I have gone through the process of analyzing for the need of optimization for the C:/ drive and also for boot-time.  The prompt for each of these indicates that there are restore points setup for my regular Windows backup tasks.  And, that the optimization procedure may possibly negatively affect the backup tasks.  I'm given two options through a prompt:  1)  I can force the optimization and then manually reset the restore points.  2)  Or, I can retry after the backup task is complete.  I am hesitant to perform optimization until I can better understand the consequences of the process.  I am posting this topic hopefully to gain some insight into what my options are.  Thanks, I sure would like to clearly understand before I proceed.    Sincerely and anxiously awaiting an answer, BT_31-22

Dear Dick

This recent error , which is now fix,  that seem to affect all NU16 users at the same time has got me thinking, i.e. was this error some sort of unfortunate coincidence or deliberately planted as a (failed) marketing ploy?

You see, it's not unheard for some companies to plant misleading errors in in their products to persuade (re: frighten) users into upgrading their software.

Sorry, just my suspicious nature.

Hi UK Bob,

Symantec / Norton might have problems but I have never found any with their ethics. The computer landscape is dynamic enough to make 'scare' upgrades unnecessary. MS is updating and fixing on a monthly basis. Other security software developers are also trying to get closer to the sources of infections in hopes of protecting their clients more completely.

No single security program can protect you 100% of the time from 100% of the threats that are being released by the thousands daily. This is fact. This is why different products focus on different infections. PUPs and some of the other PITA infections that don't destroy hardware or software slip past the Norton products. Other developers catch them. Using the combination of an active av scanner and an on demand free scanner for the lesser evils will keep your system cleaner and less likely to fail you.

The other fact is that infections are a matter of 'when' not 'if'.

We'll be here when you need us. Til then

Stay well and surf sasfe

Hi Dick, cheers for your quick reply,

I will accept that in your experience you have never had to question Symantec's ethics, and that is how it should be because if you can't trust a computer security company to keep your computer secure and not pull stunts then we all should just all give up and/or devise our own computer security strategy.

I guess I'm just a bit jumpy because a lot of the institutions we used to trust have failed us so badly, i.e. Banks that go out of their way to scam their customers, churches covering up their evil practices and so on, it just makes you wonder about what other bomb-shell is going to hit us.

Possibly, the words "faith and trust" should now just mean "sucker".

Partition magic for windows 7

Hi all,

I originally bought Partitiojn Magic 6, then had to upgrade to PM8 for Windows XP.  I've just had to fork out for a new PC, which has Windows 7 on it.  I tried installing PM8 but got the incompatibility message.  I've emailed Powerquest but haven't yet seen any response.  Is there a fix for this, so that I can get on and partition my new hard drive?

Thanks,

Ian

PS - being cheeky, can somebody remind me, please, how to disable Norton Safe Search in the Norton Bookmarks bar.  It's in one of my posts somewhere, but not obvious from the headers.

Thanks,

Ian

Hi Ian,

PM is no more.

Have you looked at W7 disk manager?

Hi UK Bob,

Faith and trust are not blind.

Trust must be earned and having faith in the real world means that those you trust have not violated that trust.

I know its shown as SOLVED but that is really a solution that I don't want to use.

I can see the points in the browser and in explorer.  I know they are ther since I just recovered the system yet they do not show in the status or the manage your backup destination page.

Windows 7x64.

Hi Dick,

Thanks for that.  Pity about PM, but then I won't be facing any upgrade cost!  I've seen a few references to W7 and partitioning, but was going to play safe with what I know works.  Looks like I've some reading to do.

Thanks again,

Ian

NU 16 & Windows 8.1

I cannot seem to find a definitive answer on whether or not Norton Utilities version 16 is FULLY compatible with Windows 8.1. I own it, but have it uninstalled as I've heard it has issues with 8.1. Is a new version on the near horizon?

FF 25 (or Waterfox), Win 8, N360 21.0.1.8.  Security option to save passwords is grayed out even when I re-start FF with all addons disabled, and both Clean Firefox options are set to off in N360 Admin Settings.  Help!

I too wouldn't mind knowing if there will be a Norton Utilities version 17 coming soon. . . after all it has already been over a year since the release of Norton Utilities 16.

I know there are many utility suites out there to choose from, and several quite good; however if possible I'd prefer to remain with Nortons.

Hi,

You fill in your information, you drop down and click on 'I agree . . . ', and then you click on 'download free trail' and nothing happens?

What is your operating system and your current security program?

Thanks

Hi,

Are you trying to save your passwords in FF or in the identity safe feature of your Norton program?

Thanks
