There are some compatibility issues with the latest version of Chrome. It is not yet officially supported by Norton as there were some significant changes in the way Chrome handles 3rd party extensions.

You may also have some corruption in your copy of Norton that could be fixed by running the Norton Removal and Reinstall tool. Download and run it from   www.norton.com/nrnr

Kindly login to Norton Anti-theft website (https://antitheft.norton.com) using the user account and password, that you had used while registration.

Click on the Intel AT icon on the machine name (on the left).

Deactivate Intel-AT via web.

Thanks,

Standalone security scanner

Hello,

I have a user I have been asked to advise regarding computer disinfection of malware under the caveat that I not needlessly modify the system, including the installation of software (even necessary software) that the user will not be using after the system is disinfected. The system in question is running Win7 x64.

As a result, I am wondering which Norton utility best fits the bill - I prefer a scanner tool that does not require installation (eg, a portable technician's version) or a software suite that is supported by a seperate clean-uninstall tool that will enable me to guarantee my ability to fully remove the software past my resolution of the infection issue (the user was insistent on this matter).

On my initial review of the Norton support site the first two utilities that caught my attention are Norton Security Scan and Norton Power Eraser - my first question is to verify whether these are indeed the Norton software most suited to addressing this situation, and if not, what should I be looking for? And my second question is just what are the differences between the two? Furthermore, I noticed that the Norton Removal Tool does not claim to uninstall Norton Security Scan - if so, then this poses a problem.

Please advise.

Welcome,

About the best scanner that I've found that will clean itself out of a system after doing its job is the eset online scanner

http://www.eset.com/us/online-scanner/

I'd recommend using a two step process of having the scanner identify all of the problems and then reviewing  the list before allowing anything to be deleted.

The best way to clean a system is to work with one of the trained volunteer staff at the free malware removal sites listed

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com
http://forums.whatthetech.com/
http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/
http://www.cybertechhelp.com/forums/
They will have tools that need to be installed long enough to identify the problems but everything can be removed once the system is clean.

I am assuming that there is an active security product installed and that it will remain and be kept current.

Keep us posted

Hi,

I don't think the Norton Security Scan will remove malware, I could be wrong but I think it will only detect malware.  You would most likely be prompted to install NAV, NIS or NPE.

NPE does not install but it is prone to false positives  -  use it carefully.

I agree with Dick that you would be best to sign up for help from one of the free malware removal sites.  They will ensure the system is completely clean of all traces of the malware and will remove any tools used in the cleanup process.

Hi Brigadier,

The choice of weapons depends on what malware you are trying to remove.  Aspirin is safe and effective on headaches, but you wouldn't use it for a broken leg because you felt that a cast would be too conspicuous, would you?  The removalists at the forums mentioned earlier are best able to determine what infections are present and to use the correct tools and procedures to remove them.  That is where you should go for help.

Prompted to install Java update today and now Constant Guard apps won't start

Was prompted to install a Java update today, and now my Constant Guard apps won't start.  When I check the list of programs on my computer, it shows Java 7/55 installed last year (not today), so I'm confused as to whether or not the install took place.  After the install, I followed a prompt to go to a web site to remove old versions (java.com/en/download/uninstallapplet.jsp according to Google Chrome history), which I did.  Afterword noticed not able to access any of my Constant Guard pages.  Another possible issue is the Open Support Web Site link on the Norton Autofix function doesn't work - though this I never use, so may not be new issue.
