Re: Standalone security scanner
Thank you all for your assistance and your expertise; this specific situation I was able to resolve using malwarebytes but I have bookmarked those links for future reference and will be sure to use those resources in the future.
Much appreciated.

Re: Uninstalled Norton Utilities 14 , but it left a folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Norton Utilities 1
If you also have a Norton Utilities 16 folder, you should be able to delete the '14' folder. Worst case scenario, would be a reinstall of NU16 if something went wrong after deletion.
can't load N U 16 on my tablet that has no cd rom drive
Purchased Norton Internet Security with the N U 16 cd. My note book has no cd rom drive. Have copied the files to a flash drive, but when I try to install and device freezes up.
I have installed and registered both the security program and the NU 16 cd on my PC, but cannot find my registered NU 16 product on file. What to do? Thanks!
Re: can't load N U 16 on my tablet that has no cd rom drive

- Memory: 64 MB (minimum) | 128 MB (recommended)
Microsoft Windows Vista® (32-bit and 64-bit)
- CPU: 1 GHz
- Memory: 1 GB
Microsoft Windows 7 and Microsoft Windows 8
- CPU: 1 GHz
- Memory: 1 GB for 32-bit | 2 GB for 64-bit
Additional Hardware Requirements
- 100 MB of available hard disk space
- SVGA (1024 x 768) video

Re: can't load N U 16 on my tablet that has no cd rom drive
Hi. Yes, I have all of the minimum requirements other than a cd rom on the notebook. I loaded Norton Internet security from the website, but I can't find the N U 16 product that I registered earlier today. They only show the new Internet Security product.
Re: can't load N U 16 on my tablet that has no cd rom drive
Try downloading from www.norton.com/nu16 . You will need to activate it with the Product Key associated with NU16. It will be a different key than the one used for NIS.
Let us know how you get on.
Re: Standalone security scanner
Just out of curiosity, what did Malwarebytes detect?
Re: can't load N U 16 on my tablet that has no cd rom drive
Hey. Did as you suggested. Download ok, but install got an error message; "incompatible error message..." . Click Norton Support; got to step 2 "AMD chipset drivers and couldn't get step 3's AMD Controller "golden ticket".
Also, at AMD step 1 clicked "notebook graphics" step 2 "auto detect" I have no idea what radeon sries I have.
Going to get my ball peen hammer, be right back...
Re: can't load N U 16 on my tablet that has no cd rom drive
Does the tablet meet this bit?
- SVGA (1024 x 768) video
Re: can't load N U 16 on my tablet that has no cd rom drive
Yes, it is currently @ 1366x768 with a (!) message "resolution lower than 1280x960, some itemsmight not fit on your screen".
Re: can't load N U 16 on my tablet that has no cd rom drive
OK, then I'm just about out of ideas. Someone else may have other suggestions, but perhaps if you contact Customer Support they may be able to find out what's causing this problem. Live Chat is usually the quickest and easiest way to reach them.
Re: can't load N U 16 on my tablet that has no cd rom drive
I'm fried as well. Time to walk in the Redwoods and erase the minds hard drive. Thank's so much for your help and time Krusty13!

Re: Norton ConnectSafe Issues?
Hi Team,
In the last week I have noticed Nortonconnectsafe for the first time. It is because I set my router to block malicious sites months ago and this week a number of safe websites were being blocked by something called Norton ConnectSafe including CNN. It took me many hours to figure out that this was a) Not a virus b) Not malware c) not my ISP 4) It was my belkin router settings
The DNS addresses my router points to are:
198.153.192.120 198.153.194.120 |
My first thought is to
1) Reset the router
2) Turn off these filters
Is there another solution?
Cheers
Peter
Re: Norton ConnectSafe Issues?
Peter, you have the same addresses as I do. When I had this problem a month or so ago, it turned out to be a Norton systems bug at those addresses, that they corrected. I think your order is correct, tactically....reboot the router and if that fails, turn off malicious site blocking within the router.
However, you might have another problem, as I just went to cnn.com and got through no problem. Since we both have the same IP @s, it doesn't make sense that it would blcok you and not me. Hopefully someone on KatieQ's team will get back to you with a response.
Re: Norton ConnectSafe Issues?
Hi jim,
Thanks for the advice. I rebooted the router and got the same DNS addresses.
I did not check CNN again - but just turned of malicious site blocking. No problems since.
I had the same problem on multiple machines and Operating systems so the problem had to either be the router or the ISP as they were the only connon reference points (unless we had a virus capable of infecting Macs, Ipads and PCs and it all happened at the same time).
I appreciate what Norton/Symantec is trying to do - but I have to say that Norton and Symantec are causing me more problems more frequently than the viruses they are designed to protect me from. I stopped buying Norton and Symatic products ~10 years ago when they bogged my machine down so much I could not use it (innefficient coding and no quality control). I hear that those problems have been fixed - but once bit .... Now the biggest problem is having to regularly de-install symantec and Norton products that have been installed in the background of an otherwise ligitimate install. It requires me to read everyt check box - and even then I miss some. Very, very, very annoying and time wasting. What is the difference between that approach to distributing their products and malware (apart from if you put enough effort into it you do have a choice). I don't want to pay money to companies that market that way.
Maybe I will change my mind one day. I hope their marketing department reads this bliog. I am sure I am not alone.
Cheers,
Pe
Re: Norton ConnectSafe (DNS) Spam Blacklist lookups
Hi
we are using :

199.85.127.20
many thanks
recursive query fail from Windows DNS server (using 199.85.162.20 and 199.85.127.20 as forwarder)
Hi,
I am getting an incorrect DNS response for DNS queries to 199.85.162.20 and 199.85.127.20 for the name 'login.live.com'
I will try to provide the full technical details here to avoid confusion or the need for further questions.
Setup:
(windows & MAC) PC's on LAN resolve DNS from a local server on the LAN
This 'local server' is running server 2008r2 and the built-in Microsoft DNS server (this is AD integrated)
The 'local server' DNS server/service has 199.85.162.20 and 199.85.127.20 as the forwarders.
Thus queries all zones NOT on the local DNS server will be resolved via the forwarder(s).
This is a 'normal' default server/lan setup. I have not tried to re-invent the wheel or do anything special.
The Problem:
Incorrect DNS responses from NortonDNS under some circumstances for lookups of 'login.live.com'
1/ When I use NortonDNS (199.85.162.20 and 199.85.127.20) as the DNS forwarders I get Invalid (incorrect) responses.
2/ When I use OpenDNS (208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220) as the DNS forwarders I get correct responses.
3/ If I directly query NortonDNS (199.85.162.20 and 199.85.127.20) using NSLOOKUP I get correct responses.
HELP!
Can anyone help resolve this for me, or am I destined not to be able to use NortonDNS anymore..
This used to work ok and stopped in the last day or so..
Diagnostic, trace and log details:
----------------------------------------------
If I query uning NSLOOKUP from a PC on the LAN for 'login.live.com' I get:
C:\>nslookup -q=any login.live.com.
Server: LocalServer.local
Address: <local servers-ip>
Non-authoritative answer:
login.live.com canonical name = login.live.com.nsatc.net
login.live.com.nsatc.net internet address = 156.154.176.20
login.live.com.nsatc.net internet address = 156.154.176.20
This is VERY wrong!!!
If I do the same Query but use OpenDNS I get the correct answer:
C:\>nslookup -q=a login.live.com. 208.67.222.222
Server: resolver1.opendns.com
Address: 208.67.222.222
Non-authoritative answer:
Name: login.live.com.nsatc.net
Addresses: 131.253.61.98
131.253.61.82
131.253.61.80
131.253.61.96
Aliases: login.live.com
Now this looks correct..
If I query DIRECTLY to NortonDNS I get:
C:\>nslookup -q=a login.live.com. 199.85.126.20
Server: UnKnown
Address: 199.85.126.20
Non-authoritative answer:
Name: login.live.com.nsatc.net
Addresses: 65.55.163.80
131.253.61.84
65.55.163.76
131.253.61.80
Aliases: login.live.com
Again.. This looks CORRECT..!
So something is going ammis on the recursive query that the local DNS server is making of NortonDNS
If I check/trace the query via the localserver DNS server I see in the log the following:
