Many of t he Norton Internet Security 2012 (and 2013, now) files are reported by XP defrag, as not able to be defraged. This did not happen in 2011 release. Help!

Hi,
I'm not positive but I think that the security for the Norton files has been tightened to prevent corruption. The Auto-Protect feature does it's very best to be sure that nothing makes changes to the Norton core files - but Norton. The amount of fragmentation that might be present should not be a problem.
If your system becomes so slow that you feel that something must be done then use the Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool to place a clean copy of the program on your system. After rebooting, be sure to run live update until the program tells you that all updates have been downloaded and installed.
Keep us posted
Re: Some Norton files have suddenly stopped defragmenting
Hi marnhullman
It could be an added security aspect through an updates from Norton as the defragmentation process rewrites the data to a different location on the hard drive this could allow the possibility of code being written into the norton product as the defragmentation process rewrites the data so Norton has locked the software out of the defragmentation process which if this is the case it sounds like a benefit rather than a problem.

My Run Diagnostic Report will not work, It comes on flickers and nothing :/

Re: My Run Diagnostic Report will not work, It comes on flickers and nothing :/
Hi 3Cats2Dogs1Fish
Have you noticed any thing strange happening on the computer and/or is it running slowly?
What is the version number of the Norton product, you can find this by clicking the Norton icon, click support, hover over, about, on the window that opens, the second line down is the version number.
Has the version changed compared to when it was working correctly?
Do you use the identity safe/vault and is it local or online?
Restart the computer, check for Norton updates manually or right click the Norton icon in the task bar and click, run live updates, and then recheck until there are no more updates restarting the computer as requested.
Try running autofix by clicking the Norton icon, click support, click get support (or right click the Norton icon in the task bar and click Get support) let it run then restart the computer. It should tell you if any items where fixed. If you get an error message about MBAM then just click on skip on the error screen.
Conflict in security software can be the cause of various issues even if the security software has been uninstalled the debris left on the system may not have caused problems until a Norton update has been installed.
Have you or have you ever had any other security software including any trial security software on the computer including Norton? If so, what is it?
Can you check in windows add/remove programmes, programme data and programme files for any security software that may have been bundled in a download?
What trial security software came with the computer?

Re: Some Norton files have suddenly stopped defragmenting
Hi intersec, dickevans and jbwnor.
Thanks for your replies and suggested answers which seem to fit with the timetable for my change to a later Norton version. With XP set to end next April I have just renewed my machine for one with Windows 7 installed and am now grappling with a whole lot of new problems. Haven't yet looked at details for Defrag but am comforted by your comments.
Regards Maqrnhullman.
Re: My Run Diagnostic Report will not work, It comes on flickers and nothing :/
Thank You for responding, I will attempt to try the steps you mentioned. The Computer has always ran Norton, since we bought it and I have renewed many subscriptions for our protection and never had a problem with residual anything. I'm thinking this all began when I played around with back up and shut it off and stopped my restore point on XP. I will get back to you on my progress, Ty so much for helping :)

Norton Utilities 15 needs activation after every re-boot
Two PCs, Win7x64, have Norton Utilities 15 installed. A couple of months ago, both copies suddenly lost their activation and needed the code to be entered when starting. This has been fine with one PC - it continues to start correctly. The other PC needs the code to be entered every time it is started after re-booting. Then it is ok until after the next re-boot.
What is causing it to forget that it is activated?
How can I make sure that it remains activated?
BTW v15 does what I want it to. I do not want v16 and all the hassle that comes with it!
Norton Utilities 15
I ran the full Norton utilities package, defrag, registry cleaner and disk cleaner and something unusual happened. My total HD space increased by 300 gb! It turns out that when disk is bleached, it leaves behind bleached files which are each 1 gb. The files should be automatically deleted at the end of the bleach process to release the disk space, but this apparently does not happen. I discovered this when Norton Ghost kept crashing because there was no longer enough room on the back up drive. It was apparently backing up all the bleached files.
Re: Norton Utilities 15 needs activation after every re-boot
Hi WylECyote
These are suggestions I have no idea if they will work, I have had NU15 on a vista system for over 11 months and have had no problems with it.
Top right hand side of the NU15 user interface is a tab for smart updates.
Have you tried uninstalling it restarting the computer and reinstalling it?
How did you get NU15 was it free with NIS and how many user licences is it for?
Have you had another copy of NU15 and installed one copy on one computer and another copy on the other computer and the yearly subscription has run out on the computer that needs activation so it recognises the current key but the copy is locked to the expired key which on a reboot clears the activation.
Try live chat on the keyboard it’s free, with a Norton representative on the link below. Vary the times of day you try, as it’s difficult to know when they are busy. The chat window will show the position you are in the chat cue and will pop up to the front of the pages being used on the computer when the Norton represenative is available to chat.
The Norton represenative may ask you to allow a remote access connection.

Re: Norton Utilities 15 needs activation after every re-boot
Thanks intesec
Norton Utilities 15 was bundled with Internet Security 3PC. The two products each have their own Product Key.
The label on the NU CD envelope says "Norton Utilities 15.0 1U 3PC IN" which I take to mean one user, up to 3 PCs and no time limit. Norton Utilities is not registered in my Norton Account, so I can't see any mechanism to manage any time limit.
I'll have a go at live chat support tomorrow.
I still have a problem with Disk Doctor failing to initialize the engine.
I had a Norton tech support person try to help me. We both thought the problem had been solved, but I still get the same message "
Re: NU 16 & Windows 8.1
I, too, would be interested in this answer. It would be good to know Symantec was at least working on resolving the compatibility issues. I don't particularly care whether the compatible version is called 16.x or 17.x, I just would like it to work. :)
I have windows 8.1 on two computers now. One has NU 16 installed, but I'm just not running most of it. The other I'm not bothering to install until I see resolution to the issues. I would also prefer to stick with Norton, but will have to begin searching if the issues are not resolved, or at least officially acknowledged, soon.
Ghost 15 - Vista Hanging at login on original and New Hard Drive
Re: NU 16 not clearing cookies
I know there are work-arounds and other products I could use, but I'd really prefer they corrected Norton Utilities functionality. I was reporting to bring attention to the fact that NU 16 isn't working properly on Win 8.1 (as others have in this forum), hoping that Symantec would resolve this.
Squeaky wheel and all. ;)
Re: Norton Utilities 15 needs activation after every re-boot
Norton Support came up trumps. No wait to get connected to 1st line and it had to be passed up to 2nd line before it was fixed. All told, it took 3 hours to finally fix it.
Re: Partition magic for windows 7
Partition Magic was sold to Paragon, who now sell it as Paragon Partition Manager - www.paragon-software.com. I can confirm that it works a treat on Windows7.
NU 16 Defragment question
Running NU 16.0.1.7 on WXP pc
I have an external Seagate Freeagent drive 1.5TB
Is it safe to allow NU to defragment this drive?
I ask because I am aware of some limitations that WXP has with large drives.

Re: Norton Utilities 15
When NU15 finished bleaching your free space you should of been prompted to restart to finish. You must click the button from within NU and not the restart button in Windows. All of the "left behind bleached files" should automatically be deleted.
You can manually highlight all of the "left behind bleached files" and delete them.
