Running NU 16.0.1.7 on WXP pc

I have an external Seagate Freeagent drive 1.5TB

Is it safe to allow NU to defragment this drive?

I ask because I am aware of some limitations that WXP has with large drives.

Hi BY,

There shouldn't be a problem,If windows explorer sees it correctly NU should as well.

The rub comes when you get over 2TB.

Just so you know ... I did go ahead and try System Mechanic - a fully operable 30 day trial - that claimed it was compatible with Windows 8.1. After running all the scans, it corrupted so many files - my system was herky-jerky, slow, and I RECEIVED, OVER THE COURSE OF A COUPLE OF DAYS, 2 FULL SCREEN wINDOWS MESSAGES ABOUT A MEMORY PROBLEM [i HAVE 16 gb, PLUS A DEDICATED VIDEO CARD] Sorry, CAPS LOck ON. I tried all sorts of fixes ... system did run better after I uninstalled the program, but there were still like 2 dozen PCI-related processes running under Task Manager that I never saw before. After a System Restore point operation, it was a little improved, but got worse again. I just resorted to a complete format and rinstallation of Windows and software. Much better!!

Beware of this product!

I am going to be patient and wait for a word from Norton before I try anything else!

My PC seems to be infected by a virus to repeatadly installs VMware virtual network adapter on my PC. This creates a conflict with my actual network adapter. It is also creating Public Network connections.

I have never installed any VMware on my PC.

I have Norton Utilities 16 on Windows7. It has worked fine for a year, but about 2 weeks ago I got messages that the 1-click optimization skipped several tasks, such as: - Windows optimization - Unused Application found - Disk defragmentation and the System health remained LOW and recommended the same tasks that was just completed. These tasks are enabled under SETTINGS. Reinstalling the product did not fix the problem. The new Norton Utilities program I purchased (which is the same version as the old one) in a bundle with the current Norton IS also did not fix the problem. It seems that some other program disables Norton Utilities.

Thank you for letting us know. We're looking into this issue and will post an update as soon as one is available.

Trying to create a bootable dvd using NBRT but the wizard does not recognize my DVD drive.

I'm trying to burn a dvd with NBRT using the wizard but the wizard keeps asking for inserting a disc in the drive (E:). I'm using an Hp desktop running Windows Vista and Internet Explorer 9, TDK DVD-R 4.7GB/GO.

Calling Norton support was no help, they referred me to the same Norton download site I'm using.

(1)  Does it make any difference whether my IE is 32 or 64 bit? And how do I know which one I have?

(2) Would using an USB key easier? How would I know whether my pc would allow booting from the USB key?

(3) Is there a problem I don't know of?

Thanks in advance for any answers offered.

It appears that the page http://setup.nortondns.com/ hasn't been updated yet to recognize the new IP addresses. Although the page states that your computer is not using Norton DNS, if you have configured the IPs in your DNS settings, you should see a block page when attempting to visit a malware site.

We'll be making updates to the ConnectSafe website to address this issue in the future.

Ghost 12 Will not let me browse for a destination

I'm running Ghost 12 on several Windows XP SP3 systems since 2010.

Now for the first time I'm getting an error message one 1 system when i browse for a backup destination:

-An unknown error has occurred.
--Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

The work around is to type in the backup path by hand or copy it from the Windows Explorer. The Browse button simply doesn't work and ends with a popup window with the error above.

Imaging still works, as well as restore.

For testing purposes I removed Noron Ghost 12 and used Symantec System Recovery 2013 trail version to see if that works.

I get the EXACT same error in SSR 2013 - although there's a little more info in terms of logging (sorry dont have the exaxt log)

Who know what to do to get rid of the message?

Thx!

Indra

dickevans, thanks for your explanation.  I understand that perfection is not possible. Nevertheless I am disappointed that Norton and their millions couldn't find malware that freebee software has found months ago. But neither their firewall and nor "full system scan" is up to the job.Norton has served me well for many years, but frankly I'm very disappointed it coud not either block or find MIXIDJ that had been around for many months. Being just a partial firewall doesn't impress me. Just my opinion.

Hi dash1730,

Norton is not intended to block these kinds of programs.  As the screenshot posted by intesec shows, Malwarebytes detects this as a PUP, a potentially unwanted program that, the removal or keeping of which, is optional.  PUPs are considered to be only potentially unwanted because they do offer some legitimate service or benefit, such as a  special toolbar, in exchange for the annoying ads or intrusive tracking that users consent to when they install the program.  In most cases these PUPs install as additional piggyback software when you install another program that you want.  It is important to read each screen whenever you are installing or updating anything on your PC, because the consent to include the PUP, and to let it do whatever is stated in its EULA, is usually preselected by default.  It is up to the user to pay attention and to opt out of anything presented in the installation that is unwanted.  Programs like Malwarebytes often detect PUPs and other grayware, whereas most traditional AV programs do not, since PUPs generally install with the user's permission and there is no way of knowing if the permission was granted knowingly or not.

I can conform that Connectsafe is working with the new IP-adresses, but the testsite not yet.

It's a bit pity, that Norton obviously forgot to update the site.

Is there any advantage to using the new IPs over the old ones?

Will the old ones be discontinued at some time soon?

I had to try this recently, and was getting errors accessing the DVD drive.

Try using the Wizard to create an ISO file. Then you can burn the DVD with burning software.
