I was trying to look around on the Norton One pages, and could not see information on Norton Anti Theft being included. What I did see was Norton Mobile Security for Android or Apple devices, which would not work on a laptop.

I'll see if someone with Norton One experience can help out.

Maybe can provide some insight.

Norton DNS can be used with any ISP. There will be no conflict when you set this up on your PC.

Norton Save & Restore 2.0 fails to start

I purchased Norton Save & Restore as part of Systemworks in 2009.  I stopped using the other components of SW some time ago, but carried on using S&R.  This is a Windows XP SP3 system, and S&R (2.0) was working well until this week, creating regular daily backup files.  I know XP is no longer supported, but why should that matter?

Now S&R fails to start up.

It opens with a window 'Calculating status...' with a big blue '?', and a progress bar appears in a dialog frame.  Progress continues until the bar almost reaches the end, then it hangs, and Task Manager shows no activity.  Clicking the Cancel button in the frame results in an error message "This program is unable to connect and communicate with the Norton Save & Restore backup service on <computer name>".  There is a 'reconnect' link, but clicking that merely repeats the same process. At the bottom of the window it says "Cannot connect to the agent on <computer name>"

Does anyone have a suggestion on how to proceed?  Product Support doesn't, of course, have anything to offer on this 'Legacy Product', except to say that no current Norton product will recover files created in S&R.

Is all my backed up data lost for ever?

Norton Power Eraser v4.3.0.13 Incompatibility with Windows Authenticode Signature Verification

$

Hi everyone,

I wish to report a compatibility issue with Norton Power Eraser v4.3.0.13 (apologies if this is not the correct forum to report this issue).

When this tool is used with Windows 8.1 or Windows 7 with the upcoming Authenticode Signature Verification checking enabled (as mentioned in the Microsoft Security Advisory 2915720 linked to below), Power Eraser fails to run correctly.

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-US/library/security/2915720

The tool will launch but cannot perform any scans as shown in the following screenshots:

Power_Eraser_Version.png

Link to Image:

I followed the recommendation of downloading the tool again but the issue still occurred.

The changes to the Windows Registry to enable this Authenticode Signature Verification are as follows:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Cryptography\Wintrust\Config]
"EnableCertPaddingCheck"="1"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Cryptography\Wintrust\Config]
"EnableCertPaddingCheck"="1"

To disable this functionality (which allows Power Eraser to function normally), the following should be added to the Windows Registry:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Cryptography\Wintrust\Config]
"EnableCertPaddingCheck"=-

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Cryptography\Wintrust\Config]
"EnableCertPaddingCheck"=-

I realize the above registry changes have not been finalized and will only come into effect in August 2014 but I am reporting this issue since it has the potential to affect more users of Power Eraser as more users test the above upcoming changes.

The versions of Windows which show this issue are: Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit (with kb 2919355 and all others updates installed) and Windows 7 SP1 64 bit.

If I can provide any other information, please let me know. Thanks for your time.

I am by no means an expert on this question, but my quick read on this shows it is the DNS servers cached data that gets corrupted. Is any server on the internet 100% safe from attack by experienced hackers?

I do not see your system being any more vulnerable.

Maybe   can comment.

Thanks for the info.

But as the change will not take affect until August 2014, I'm sure Norton will make whatever changes are necessary for NPE and any other software in time.

It is only techies and beta testers that will run into any problems. And Norton has always noted they do not support non released software or OSs.

What happens if you just wait as long as it takes when it seems to stall? Try running it overnight to see if it will eventually complete.

If you do get it running, you might want to make a restore to an external drive so you have all your data. Then shop around for a current backup solution.

Norton Save and Restore is really Ghost 10 and the "agent" is the service.

Click start and in the run box type: services.msc

press enter to open up the list of services.

I can't remember what the service is called, it may be called

save and restore

Norton Save and restore

or maybe even Norton Ghost

If you find it, it should be started, if it is not try starting it and verify it is set as "automatic".

With the service running try doing another backup.

Hi,

Yes, we have DNSSEC Support to help prevent DNS poisoning attacks.

Thanks,

Incompatibility Utilities and Classic Shell

$

I am a long-time Norton user. I have an HP HDX 18t Laptop with Vista Ultimate. I had Norton 360 and Norton Utilities 15 installed.

Due to huge virus corruption and then losing touchpad and keyboard, I decided to upgrade to Windows 8.1. I did a clean install. Then reloaded all my programs. Ran Norton restore to get my files back. I downloaded and installed the newer version of Norton Utilities 16 but couldn't activate it since my key was for version 15. Version 15 doesn't work in Windows 8.1 and so I kept Norton 16.  I did not like 8.1 Tile World so I downloaded and installed Classic Shell. I ran Norton Utilities several times without activation.  Just recently, I worked up the extra funds to validate/activate my Norton Utilities 16. I ran a registry scan before I shut down. I noticed that it had 23 Registry items to clean. I thought that was due to all the installing/re-installing files and programs.

The next day, I turned on my computer and got a black screen. Not blue--black. I know now I have to take it in for a techie to look at but I am figuring that the Norton Utilities 16 doesn't like or doesn't recognize Classic Shell and dumped the registry files.

I am just giving a heads up about the incompatibility issue I think is going on. The last thing I did was run Norton Utilities 16.

I got a mess on my hands and I will have to put in the shop. This is just FYI.

Welcome,

Have you tried to run a startup repair from the installation disk? I don't like the 'metro' / touch screen / tile interface either. I have adjusted w8.1 so that it boots to the desktop. It's a test system so I haven't found it necessary to try the classic shell there.

Keep us posted

I updated Norton 360 to Norton 360 Premier Edition and ever since have been having problems with it.

 Some Norton files get downloaded to the Documents folder these files are not a security risk so It should not matter where the files are located.

You can feel free to move them where ever you wish.
