Hi mrlips,

Can you please check a couple of the porn and alcohol websites at Norton  Safe Web https://safeweb.norton.com/ to see if they are rated as malicious or not.

If they are rated as safe, please

1. Send me the URLs  you tested with by Private Message via the Forum and we will check into this.

2. Let us know what state and country you are located.

Thanks

Katie

HI xjr328:

Welcome to the Norton forum.

I believe that Norton SystemWorks (NSW) Standard and Premier are both discontinued products - see rghmktg's thread here titled Can't Renew Norton SystemWorks.  I'm not certain, but to the best of my knowledge NSW offline installers are no longer available for download from the Norton site.

Most users with up-to-date Norton products can log into their Norton account at www.mynortonaccount.com to check the status of their subscription and find their product key online, but I'd suggest that you contact Norton Customer Support via LiveChat at www.norton.com/chat to see what they suggest.  If you still have a valid subscription for NSW that hasn't expired they might be able to upgrade you to Norton AntiVirus, Norton Internet Security or Norton 360 (see GoClickGo Marketing's product comparison charthere) but I wouldn't be surprised if you were required to purchase a new product.

If you want to stay with Norton and can't get a free upgrade, I'd suggest you check out prices at a few local retails stores or authorized online dealers like Amazon, since buying directly from the Norton online store is often the most expensive way to purchase a new license.

Hi xjr328:

Glad to hear you found an alternate download site, but please proceed with caution.  HerdProtect has flagged downloadsource.net for bundling trojans and other malware with their installers - see their site analysis for downloadsource.net here.

Before you run this installer, I'd suggest that you submit it for a SHA256 hash analysis at VirusTotal  (assuming the file doesn't exceed the max file size of 64 MB).  A high detection rate with VirusTotal would indicate that a wide variety of AV software considers the installer to be unsafe/malicious.

If VirusTotal reports the file is safe and you decide to continue with the installation, be sure that you click any Custom or Advanced buttons on the installation wizard and decline all bundled browser toolbars, etc. that might try attempt to install PUPs (potentially unwanted programs) like adware or browsers hijackers on your system.  After SystemWorks is reinstalled a full system scan with the free version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware would also be prudent.

Norton Utilities-Recover quits with Generic Error

I pulled a real bonehead move and am trying to recover from it. I have an HP Laptop running Windows 8 (thats not the bonehead move part), that I was backing up to a USB drive. Instead of copying the files, I marked them for CUT and PASTE. When the laptop started the operation, it ran into a "KERNEL" error and BSD (Blue Screen of Death) error. I rebooted and my photo directory with over 20 Gigs of photo memories was gone.

I have installed Norton Utilities 16.0 on the Laptop and run RECOVERY (Unerase) on it just looking for JPG files. I have done this about 6 times and the result is the same. I get a generic Windows dialog box with the wording

Norton Utilities 16.0 has stopped working.

a problem has caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.

To me it appears it can find some files because it finds over 11,831 files before it seems to choke on files listed as in the "CACHEDIMAGE ..... " sub-directory and gives the error. Each time I have tried to modify the criteria to eliminate the error (ie file size, type, etc), but it keeps coming back and then shuts down norton. I am desparate for a solution or other avenues to try.

Hi,

I don't know what the problem with NU is, but to help you try and get your pictures back you could download and install Piriform's Recuva program.

https://www.piriform.com/recuva

Please let us know how you get on.

Thanks.

Edit : There is a free version, just click the green download button to get the comparison chart.

A possible caution about downloading another recovery program.

As you save the file to your hard drive, you risk overwriting the files you want to recover. See if you can find a utility that you can run from a USB drive.

Norton Security Scan

When I right click on a individual file for Norton to scan instead of Norton it comes up as Malawarebytes Anti-Malware and I have no clue why all of a sudden this has changed.

Hi, betseyd112. Welcome.  Are you signed in as an Administrator ? Normally if you right click on a file and you have NIS or Norton 360, it will show in the list along with MalwareBytes.

In my case it's NIS and in the option list it's listed as Norton Internet Security, and when you click on the small arrow, the option to Scan Now is shown.

What product are you using ?

Are you using NIS or Norton 360, and is it fully up to date ?

The current version of those is 21.3.0.12, which you can check by going to the main UI and selecting Support/About.

If you've downloaded the stand alone Norton Security Scan, you may not have those options.

Here is some info on it. I don't think you can scan individual files.

Hi, angela01. Welcome. What Norton product are you using ?

In NIS for instance you would go to the main UI, select Computer/Real Time Protection, and slide the Auto Protect slider to the left {On}

If you are talking about NU16, Open NU > Privacy tab > Clear Your Windows History > untick Recycle Bin > Save Choices.
