NPE back to the restored Internet connection screen. Cannot connect to Insight server too. Assuming a problem on Norton's end?

Norton Power Eraser: inconsistent behaviour

$

Last few times I ran NPE it gave me several reports I never had before, and which puzzle me.

First strange thing: after the restart it asked me (again) if I would want the run the file NPE.exe, instead of the usual NPE progress screen showing it is already doing its thing. After a few reruns that is now gone.

Next it told me that "NPE has succesfully restored internet connection. Host file and NPE proxy settings may have been modified." After a few reruns that is now gone too.

Subsequently, it reported two files as bad: bhdrvx64. sys and idsvia64.sys. It recommended to delete them (which NPE would do for me at the next restart); I accepted, my pc restarted and I got the message from NPE it failed to delete. Nevertheless it was the last of that. New NPE runs told me all was fine and no threats were found.

Today I ran NPE again. And now it told me the same (reporting them as bad and/or suspicious) about the following files: PortRoyale.exe and MasterSplitter.exe  These files are legit and official, but I nevertheless deleted/uninstalled them. And again after rerunning NPE, it reported that no threats were found. I am wondering if I am facing a buggy version of NPE of perhaps a damaged Windows?

But most of all I want to know if my Root sector is free of bad stuff. Can I still trust NPE on this when it gives these strange file reports? Also I want to know that when NPE checks the root sector, does it only check the root sector of the hard drive containing Windows or also the root sectors of any other hard drives I have installed? (I have three hard drives.)

Normally I do a new Windows installation once a year (which should take care of any residing bad things, because of the formatting of the primary partition), and that is now overdue for some time. So, my only real worry at the moment is the integrity of my root sector. I know what do to if it is infected, but that takes a lot of extra work. So, it would be nice to know that I could still trust NPE on that, set aside its inconsistent file reports.

To be clear: over the last few years I ran NPE, I never before had this behaviour.

Let's hope it is something that easy. As I am just a volunteer user and not an employee I cannot comment on how the activation is handled.

Let's hope my contact can get an answer soon.

NPE gets updated occasionally to help handle different threats or to make the operation better. This could explain why you are seeing different behaviours from the past.

It sounds like you do seem to have a handle on how Windows works, but it is not recommended to run NPE unless normal scans with NIS/NAV/360 show there is a problem that they cannot handle. NPE can actually flag a critical Windows System file for deletion, and if the user does not know what the file is and allows NPE to remove it, the system can become unbootable.

An example of that is the driver files that were found by one of your scans. If you understand what they are, you know whether it is safe to remove them, or if they are false positives from the NPE scan.

I'll leave your root sector questions to those with experience in that area.

New type of spam email interfering with AntiSpam funtionality

Hello,

I just worked extensively with a Support rep from Norton whom was repmted into my computer.  There is a new format of email spam that the Nigerian sleezebags are sending out that integrates some sort of Office functionality from some form of an office suite that integrates a calendar feature.  I am believing that this new format with its integration of a calendaring feature is completely preventing the AntiSpam integration from working.  When the button is clicked abolutely nothing happens.  I am going to be receiving a follow up from Norton but I am looking to see if anyone else has started seeing this and might be having the same experience or symptoms?

I have just "Googled" the phrase fileoffice@yahoo.com and there apparently are others out there receiving this new variation of the 419 scam from the Nigerian sleezebags so I am hoping to generate an alarm within the Norton company and community that they need to pay attention to this latest integration rendering their software useless/unusable.

I would appreciate any and all feedback and comments on this latest and greatest attempt by slezebags to push their crminal activity.

Unfortunately without being able to prove ownership of the computer, it will be difficult, if not impossible to find someone to unlock the system. Especially on a support forum.

This kind of question is what a thief would ask, and you would not want someone helping someone who stole your computer.

Your best hope is to find a way to contact the original owner.

What email client are you using, and what version?

If it is an Office exploit, be sure you have run the Microsoft Updates to get the latest updates for your MS Office.

Register Norton Account Popup Messages

$

18 months after a 2 year renewal of Norton Internet Security, I have suddenly started getting repeated popup messages titled "Register Norton Account" saying I need to register and that registered users get better support.  Although the message makes no sense in my context, I went ahead and clicked on it, only to be told "we are unable to proceed with your Norton account at this time".  This popup comes up every couple of hours and I can't get rid of it without clicking on it, and it always fails.

So I then tried to bring up my main Norton window.  It comes up and updating and scanning is going fine, but if I click on Account, I get the same error as above.  Also, the window itself looks a little weird.  The whole background is black, with just white titles. There are no graphics, the way there used to be.

Any idea what might be going on?

Can't Uninstall Symantec Products. NU and NIS

My computer crashed during a Nortons scan. Utilities or Antivirus? Not sure, I can't tell the difference. I tried running Norton Removal tool, but it told me to uninstall Norton Utilities 15 first. I did, rebooted, and ran the removal tool again. Same message.  I deleted the folders Norton Utilities left on my computer. Same message. I removed any reference to Norton or Symantec from my regstry. Same message. I installed and uninstalled Norton Utilities. Same message.

I'm probably going to have to format and reinstall Windows.  Any other ideas out there?

Norton Anti-Theft activation bug (usability issue)

My Norton Anti-Theft activation key on card is five sets of number separated with dashes (29 symbols total):

    12345-ABCDE-12345-ABCDE-12345

Activation page antitheft.norton.com/retail (step 2) contains textbox wich allows enter only 25 (less that on card with activation key). SO:

1. User cannot complete enter activation code written on his product card/box because it is 4 simbols longer that allowed to enter.

2. User does not know that code should be enter withoud dashes because there is no description how activation code should be enter with dashes or without.

3. It is not possible remove dashes without erase all activation code because cursor moves to the last symbol automatially

4. Norton Antivirus, Internet Security they have five textboxes for each part of the activation code and Norton Anti-Theft does not.

5. Font size in textbox is small

Same s... happen with Mobile Security.

Note: this mistake will increase number of calls to support and level of disappointing with Symantec/Norton products and as result decrease product sales.

P.S. Support could not hellp me with this problem in chat and phone call (I was waiting for 15 minutes for reply than hang phone)

Do not post your product key. Moderators will remove it.

Try entering the key without the dashes. I see the activation page does not say this. Is there any information on the card with the product key about entering the code?

See if you can uninstall NIS using the Windows Control Panel - Programs. Then run the installer for NIS.

This worked...sort of.  After signing back in, I got a message that Norton Internet Security had been successsfully registered.  However, I'm still missing all the graphics.  For example, there is a title, "Scan Now" but no picture beneath it.  I guess this doesn't actually matter, as I can do all the functions from the screen, without the pictures.  So thank you very much for the fix for the registration issue!
