Re: Register Norton Account Popup Messages

Glad I could help with the registration issue.

Have you restarted your computer to see if the graphics return?

Check that your graphics drivers are up to date. You may also try deleting the graphics adapter from Windows Device Manager. Then restart your computer to have Windows reinstall the drivers.

Norton Utilities 16 stops during deep scan

I'm running Windows Vista 64 bit and Norton Internet Security. I've just installed Norton Utilities 16 and the first thing I did was a registry clean, including a deep scan. The scan found a bunch of problems in various places but stopped during the deep scan. I then ran it without the deep scan and fixed the problems, and repeated the deep scan: it stopped again. I tried switching Windows to Safe Mode but still had the failure in deep scan. I switched back to normal mode: same problem.

The point at which deep scan stops is 98% through (at which point it claims to have found over 35,000 issues!) At the time, it says it's scanning hkey_local_machine\system; this disappears after a few minutes and I'm left with just the "Scanning Deep Scan" message alone (see attached screen images below).

Can anyone suggest what I should do?

Thanks,

Giles.

Hi,

Maybe someone else will offer you another option, but the two I can think of are;

  1. Try uninstalling / reinstalling  www.norton.com/nu16
  2. Contact Customer Support  -  they may want to remotely access you machine to diagnose.  www.norton.com/chat

Have you installed Vista Service Pack 2?

Have you run Smart Update in NU?

Sorry, but that's the best I've got.  I hope it helps.

Hi Krusty,

Many thanks for your suggestions - I'll give each of them a go. (For what it's worth, I do have Vista Service Pack 2, but I haven't run NU Smart Update - which I'll also try.)

Drive Image 7.0.3 patch required

A few days ago, I noticed that my Drive Image 7 on WinXP SP3 created lots of errors making my work impossible. The only solution to this problem is update with Drive Image 7.0.3 patch, which I can't find on Norton ftp site.

Where can I download it?

Thx for your answer, Peter.

That NPE can give false positives, was new to me. That would explain it. Because those files were all present during several previous versions of NPE I ran over the last 18 months. And then they were never considered to be a problem and/or suspicious. Btw: it is not that I run NPE all the time; only once every 2 or 3 months. Just to be on the safe side and to make sure NAV has not missed anything.

What I mean in my first post with "root sector", is ofcourse the boot sector (a.k.a. master boot record) of the hard drive.

Should be obvious, but it cannot hurt to clearify.

I hope someone can tell me if NPE (or NAV for that matter) scans the boot sector of all hard drives that are present, or only the one containing the Windows installation.

Please let us know how you get on.

Thanks.

How long did you wait to see if it would complete?

Try letting it run overnight and see if it completes.

AFAIK

The only boot sector that is ever accessed is on the Boot drive. Unless you dual boot from a separate physical hard drive, the other boot sectors should not be used.

With 35,000  + items I'd suggest there is something seriously wrong.  I would not let NU clean that many entries.

Thx for the reply, Peter.

Although your answer is not wrong as such, it is not an answer to my question. For a correct start up of the computer the boot sector of the hard drive containing the Windows installation, needs to be accessed ofcourse.

But every hard drive has a boot sector of its own, and it contains basic info about the hard drive (the number and size of partitions, for example). And during the bios phase of the start up, one can see that the bios performs a basic check on all hard drives to see if they are oke. It can do that only through the boot sector of that particular hard drive. But you are right when you say that the boot sector of the hard drive containing the Windows installation is the essential one.

I know some about this, beacuse I had a boot sector infection some years ago (which made me say goodbye to the free antivirus program and switch to my current NAV). My system then had two hard drives and both boot sectors were infected. So, it seems only logical that a scan by anti-virus software should be able to scan more than the boot sector of one hard drive. Now I only want a confirmation of that assumption.

But we are getting away from my original question, which you already answered in your first reply.
For my boot sector question I will search the forums, and if I cannot find an answer, I will make a seperate thread for it.

Thx again.

Thanks for the thoughts. For what it's worth, having tried your initial suggestions I contacted Symantec. I had a web chat, followed by a phone call and then a referral to econd line support, who called me back. He then logged on to my computer and has, to date, spent a day and a half remotely attempting to figure out what's up and trying to fix it; I don't think he's succeeded yet (although the effort is clearly immense!) and I'm guessing he'll be back in touch later today.

So if there is a solution, ultimately, I suspect it'll be unique to my particular circumstances - shame, really, because I'd have liked to pass on to the community whatever I'd learned. If it does turn out there's something worth knowing I'll add it here - but I'm not holding my breath!

As the tpoic title indicates does it block P2P sites and traffic? I need to do this on my network. Thanks.

Yes, that was my bad...I was glancing over the code example and reacted too quickly.

Did you get the product activated by entering just the letters and numbers without the dashes?

Just thinking out loud here...

As the registry files are saved to the hard drive, ( I know they are loaded into memory when Windows starts), is it possible that NU is trying to access the file on the hard drive? If this is the case, it is possible there is some physical problem with the location of those files on the disc? Maybe a disc check would be in order, it cannot hurt.

To check your hard disk, click on the Windows Start button. In the search box type CMD. Right click on cmd.exe and click on run as administrator. In the command prompt type "chkdsk c: /r"  without the quotes. A message will come up asking if you want to check the disk on the next restart. Answer 'Y'. Reboot and the check disk will run before Windows starts up. This check will check the file system as well as the physical disk surface. This scan can take a long time, depending on the size of your hard drive.

Whatever you find out will be useful to someone. It may be one specific program or utility you have that may be uncommon. If even one other user has that same program it could help them.

Norton Utilities 16 for Windows 8.1 - Not [really] Compatible

Windows 8.1 Pro w/ Media Center - 64 bit -- fully updated

NIS 21.4.xxx

I'ne been trying to find a suitable system maintainence suite that works with 8.1. I have always used NU. It was fine, more or less, until 8.1 was released. I have updated NU to the latest patch. Uninstalled, reformatted [far too many times, it would seem]. I can reinstall and fully update windows - all is fine - install all my software - all is fine - then I install NU 16.2 and things start to happen. Looping reboot, for example.

I have tried several other programs as well ... registry scans seem to always screw something up.

Right now, I'm back to a fresh install of Windows - fully updated - with all the software that I use and I'm leaving it at that for now.

Not really asking tfor technical support on a specific issue, but I would like to know if Norton Utilities will ever be updated - I mean really updated - to be be fully Windows 8.1 compatible. Right now, it seems as if it is haphazardly patched. Other than privacy cleans, I am beginning to wonder if system suites are even necessary, or useful, any longer.

Could be, but I am hesitant to install NU again - or any system suite, for that matter - until a new FULLY compatible version is released. I have had just too many odd results and am tired of doing factory restores and having to reinstall all my software. Microsoft say they do not recommend registry cleaners, so I think I will heed their advice this time.
