Re: Norton Utilities 16 for Windows 8.1 - Not [really] Compatible

I understand your hesitancy, as I have not yet moved to Win 8 for the same reasons. Until all the wrinkles have been worked out of the new OS, I will not move up.

As to using the NU now, you could still use the other features of the suite, and just disable the registry scans.

I'm having the same problem and yes it IS Norton DNS because when I use 8.8.8.8 as my DNS server it works perfectly. It's odd because not every document is blocked from download but this googleusercontent.com is new and since it is being blocked I cannot download some Google Docs because of this. Please help.

Hi Peterweb,

THanks for the thought. I've given the chkdsk approach a go, but it doesn't look to me as if it's likely to be the problem - at least, the final log says (amongst other things):

"Windows has checked the file system and found no problems. 968377343 KB total disk space. 729577068 KB in 373192 files. 213636 KB in 54630 indexes. 0 KB in bad sectors. 580779 KB in use by the system. 65536 KB occupied by the log file. 238005860 KB available on disk. 4096 bytes in each allocation unit. 242094335 total allocation units on disk. 59501465 allocation units available on disk."

In case it's of interest, the status with Norton is that the 2nd line support guy, having spent two days attempting to trace the problem, has taken a log of all his efforts to give to their engineers to see if they can come up with something. I'll give a synopsis here if they find anything that turns out to be potentially useful...

Just to confirm that you used the /r option with chkdisk to check the physical properties of the disk?

Hi h_jin3hotmail,

Norton Safe Web rates website doc-0c-20-docs.googleusercontent.com with one computer threat.  You mentioned googleusercontent.com.  Is this the exact URL that is being blocked?  Can you please show us the block screen where shows the URL and the block message?

Also, please let us know what Norton Connect Safe IP addresses you use.

Thanks,

Katie

Yup, I did it just as you said - I'm not savvy enough to know all the variations of DOS-type language, so I tend to use it only when advised!

Hi clubmix,

Norton ConnectSafe protects you from accessing malicious sites and sites with unwanted or offensive content, based on filtering policies you select.  If you are referring to File Sharing websites, they can be filtered out or allowed depending on the policy you select.

Thanks

Katie

The options shown for the Norton DNS options do not mention P2P sites. Would it come under the Other category because many P2P sites can have mature content?

I guess we will have to let the Symantec techs do their job.

Please get back to us if you get a solution.

Hi peterweb,

Policy C blocks File Sharing websites.  Please check out the link here for details: https://connectsafe.norton.com/businessuser.html

Fast Deployment using Pre-Configured Protection Policies

Choose from three pre-configured protection policies:

  • Security (malware, phishing sites and scam sites)
  • Security + Pornography
  • Security + Pornography + File Sharing
  • All three policies block malware, phishing sites and scam sites.
  • Pornography includes sites that contain sexually explicit material.
  • File Sharing includes sites that provide or promote file sharing (P2P) applications or content.

Thanks

Katie

Hi katie

Your link explains why I did not see that. Your link is for the Business user, while my image is from the Home user pages.

Are the DNS settings the same for Business and Home users? If so, maybe you can see if the Home user page can be updated.

I can't post the reply. It keeps telling me I have to choose an answer as a solution?

WHY DOESN"T THIS SITE ACCEPT JPG AS AN ATTACHMENT? I try PDF but it splits into 6 pages.

You already verified that you are blocking googleusercontent.com why do you need to prove to you that I'm using norton connect safe?

That is just a reminder that when your issue is resolved, it helps other users with similar problems to find a solution.

As to attaching jpg files, you can do that by clicking on the 'tree' icon above the reply text box. It is not an attachment, but it places the image directly in your reply.

From your image, I see a reference to another DNS search. Are you using any other DNS services?

How have you set up Norton DNS? In the router or on the individual PCs?

The question asked about Norton DNS is not to verify you are using it, but to find out which level of protection you have chosen.

We are only using Norton DNS. Not sure what that other message about DNS service is about. Here are the dns servers. 199.85.126.30 199.85.127.30 Has any progress been made on this or is Norton still blocking the Google drive sub domain?

Well I've had to stop using Norton Connectsafe since nobody is bothering to fix this. BTW it is also causing sharing Google Docs to fail as well. Really disappointed in Norton DNS. It has really gone downhill lately.
