Problems with Norton Anti-Spam and Norton Management

I have two separate problems I need to solve.

I am using Norton Internet Security 21.5.0.19 on an HP ENVY 700-019 Desktop running Windows 8.1. My licence allows me to install NIS on up to three computers.

1.0 Norton anti spam tool bar not appearing in Outlook 2003

1.1 I noticed this after an install of Adobe Reader 11 also installed another antivirus program (McAfee I think). I uninstalled the anti virus program and thought every was OK, but then noticed that the anti spam tool bar was missing.

1.2 I checked the settings under Network / Message Protection and all the settings looked OK to me.

1.3 One article I found on-line suggested that the problem was with Outlook and could be fixed by switching off the junk mail feature of Outlook (Actions/Junk e-mail/Junk e-mail options/options - no automatic filtering). This made no difference.

1.4 Another article I found on-line suggested I down load and run the "Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool". (https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/norton-internet-security/21.5.0.19/solutions/v60392881_EndUserProfile_en_us). I have not run this yet.

1.5 Before I ran remove and reinstall tool, I checked my program status on Norton Management, and ran into the second problem.

2.0 When I checked Norton manager, I found that I had four devices registered. The status of two of the devices were not as I wanted. My licence allows me to install NIS on up to three computers.

2.1 One device, a Vista computer, was reported to be using a trial version of NIS. It was supposed to be one of the licensed devices.

2.2 The second device no longer existed, but was still licensed. I had the hard drive on my HP ENVY fail and had it replaced. I gave the computer a new name when I did this, and it is licensed under that name. The name of the non existing device is the old name for the HP ENVY.

2.3 I tried to remove the non existing device by clicking on the remove device icon. The message "uninstalling" with a spinning circle appeared. After over an hour nothing has changed. The message "uninstalling" remains and the circle continues to spin.

2.4 I tried logging off the Norton website and logging on again. I had some problems logging again, but that seems OK now. This seems to have had no effect on the "uninstalling" message.

In summary:

1. I want to remove the licence from the non-existing device.

2. I want assign the licence to the VISTA machine that currently has a trial version.

3. I want to get the Anti-Spam toolbar back in Outlook.

You need to use the McAfee uninstall utility that you can find from the list here, to make sure you have fully removed the McAfee you got with Adobe Reader.

Usually as you reinstall the product on a system with the same motherboard, you are not charged an activation. That is why you see 4 installs. On my system I have multiple instances of NIS on my dual boot system, but it shows as 2 installs, but only one activation.

2.3 I tried to remove the non existing device by clicking on the remove device icon. The message "uninstalling" with a spinning circle appeared. After over an hour nothing has changed. The message "uninstalling" remains and the circle continues to spin.

As you were having trouble logging back in, noted in 2.4 below, there could have been some issue with any of the servers between your computers and the Norton Management servers. Try again now that some time has passed to see if things work properly.

2.4 I tried logging off the Norton website and logging on again. I had some problems logging again, but that seems OK now. This seems to have had no effect on the "uninstalling" message.

Will there be a NU17, or any other version?

Any updates? I thought this would be something similar to what others are experiencing with certain domains needing to be whitelisted.

When you clicked Remove device, was it the trash can circled here?

As to your Outlook issue, I do not use it so I have no experience to help. Was it working correctly before?

One thing that might be affecting things is your Win 8.1. An issue with Windows 8/8.1 is the Fast Start feature. With this enabled, you never actually get a full shutdown, which is needed by Norton, and other programs, every once in a while to fully update itself. See this information from Windows Eight Forums on how to turn off this feature. http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/6320-fast-startup-turn-off-windows-8-a.html

With Win 8.1, you can right click on the Start button on the Windows desktop and select Shut Down to force a complete shut down.

Peterweb:

To be completely honest, I don't remember which one I clicked. I tried clicking the one you circled just now and that removed the device. So my problem there seems to be solved now.

Thank you.

As to the outlook issue:

I always use the right click/shutdown option when I turn off the computer.

I will try turning off the fast start up and see if that helps.

Verify that the Norton Outlook Plugin is enabled...

Start Outlook and go into Options / Add-Ins / Manage  "COM Add-ins"

Look down the list for the Norton AntiSpam Plugin and verify that it is checked - If it's not, check it (to enable the add-in).

Kind regards,

John

avjohnnie,

Thanks for your advice.

I did as you suggested and checked the Norton AntiSpam plug in, but it wouldn't stay checked and the problem wasn't fixed.

I did find a solution. I checked the Norton Antispam plug in and then clicked remove. Then I clicked add and found the file for the plug in at: C:\Program Files (x86)\Norton Internet Security\Engine\21.5.0.19\msouplug.dll

Then I checked the box and clicked OK. That solved the problem.

Symantec Endpoint Protection Port Sniffer?

$
0
0

Hello!  I am going to provide a lot of data on my problem.  Sorry if anything is extraneous!

Here's the problem: I was wondering if the Endpoint Protection Port Sniffer could be blocking internet traffic to and from my computers.  Additional data is as follows:

I have 5 computers in my house.  1 is Windows Home Server 2011, 4 are personal computers running Win7 x64.  Three of the computers are running Norton 360 and two are running Symantec Endpoint Protection (the home server and one laptop).  I also have 4 wifi enabled i-devices.

I switched from DSL to cable internet 20 days ago.  The home server is hard-wired to the cable modem.  All other devices are connecting by wifi.  The internet is being managed by a combination cable modem and wireless gateway, Motorola SBG6580.  Since I switched to cable internet, two computers and two of my i-devices have not been able to consistently connect to the network and receive the internet stream.  Yes, they connect to the network just fine.  No, they are not consistently receiving the internet stream.

Last weekend, the laptop running Endpoint Protection stopped connecting to the network and flagged suspicious activity from an IP address.  The problem is that the IP address listed is the home server, the other computer running Endpoint Protection.  I know the home server performs "health assessment" scans every so often, but I think Endpoint Protection is reacting negatively to those scans and then blocking the port.

I thought I narrowed my internet woes to the wireless gateway, but then this port sniffer message came up.  So, could it be Endpoint Protection messing with the internet in my home network or do I have a bad wireless gateway?  My i-devices are not virus protected, but for some reason they don't consistently connect to the network...  Do I need to add my home server to a list of "accepted connection sockets" or something?  Could it be the wireless protocol (e.g. 802.11 b or g or n)?  I'm pulling my hair out and I don't want to buy new equipment if it isn't going to solve the problem.

Any information this community can provide will be greatly appreciated!

Can you help?

The one click optimization  for Norton Utilities 16 goes to 20% then freezes. The screen shows 4 registry errors have been detected and it has stopped at hkey_classes_root\clsid\{ff48de4b-8769-48f6-a008-97688395d1f0}.

Further, when attempting to perform a registry scan, it freezes at 77% and stops at the same address as shown above. All categories are okay except the following:

Error 1 add/remove programs

Error 2 temporary file shorcuts

I do have a sweetpacks intestation which could be contirbuting to the probelm. The computer is running Windows 7 and Norton Internet Security (current) is working fine.

Any help you can provife will be greratly appreciated.

Dennis

You say it is 2 computers that are having issues. Are they the ones with SEP installed.

If this is related to the Symantec Endpoint Protection, you need to post over at the Symantec forums here.

I would start by removing the Sweetpacks infestation before we try fixing Norton Utilities.

To be sure your system is clean of other things that might accompany Sweetpacks, I would suggest you sign up at one of the free Malware Removal sites below. Do not try to do anything on your own as it could make things harder for the Malware Removal expert at that site to help you. Choose one and stay there until your system is clean.

If I uninstall Norton Utilities will it remove the fixed items?

Okay I own Norton Utilities 16. The "Registry" being scanned for errors; clearly I use Norton Utilites for the fix.

If I were to un install NU 16, would that remove the fixed items?

Heres the thing; in my Event Manager I'm having a Remote Access Connection Manager problem; after attempting a fix it keeps saying "Cannot find file" now I cannot, cannot link this to Norton Utilities but I wanna try.  So what I'm thinking is:

De Activate all Windows Components (Control Panel/Add Remove Windows Features)

Clearly Reboot PC

Un Install all Norton Products because I'm thinking its the only way for a clean slate (but I'm hoping after wiping Norton from my system it would clear out any errors NU16 has fixed)

Re Activate Windows Features

Clearly Reboot PC

Look at Event Viewer for problem...and if by chance I'm not seeing it, I will also install Norton Internet Security, wait a day or 2 and then install Norton Utilities.  Clearly at this point if still not seeing the error I will take to the boards prior to fixing any registry entries it finds

Thanks

Hi,

Deleting NU will not change anything in your registry

As Dick says, removing NU will not reverse any of the changes you made to your system.

If you are having issues with Remote Access, it may be a Windows update that may have changed something. It could also be some corruption of the required files.

To check your Windows installation, click on Start and type CMD in the search box. Right click on cmd.exe and click on Run as Administrator. Type 'sfc /scannow' without the quotes. This will check your Windows installation and try to correct any errors it finds.
