Hi, I would like to discontinue my automatic renewal subscription with Norton Internet Security as I no longer have the computer that had this product enabled, please could you send me details of how to unsubscribe from the automatic renewal as I am paying for a service/product I no longer use.  Many thanks for your assistance with this matter and I look forward to hearing from you.

NHP / Norton Hotspot security - wired and wireless connections get double counted as two "users"?

$

I think NHP is "double counting" my laptops as two devices and then telling me I have five devices connected when I do not actually have five connected...

Sometimes my laptops are connected by wired connections and sometimes by wifi...

NHP is set to always protect and I'm guessing that the licensed connections are being counted by MAC addresses and NOT by machine names or some other method ... this seems to be what's happening to me .... could one of the programmers check this potential license bug?

Thanks!

Norton Utilities 16 - Have I purchased the correct product?

$

I today purchased NIS16 under the impression I would be able to create a bootable device (DVD or USB) to enable me to investigate an inoperable W7 system. (suspect corrupt boot sector).

I have installed this NIS16 on a Vista system, and have doubts I selected the correct product. Help please.

Can I correct my earlier acronym...too long at the PC...I meant NU16 (Norton Utilities 16) not NIS.

Re: one click optimization will not complete

I still have the identical problem after fully cycling thru Recovery/Repai Drives/Surface Scan/Reboot sequence as suggested. This took about 12 hours and did not report finding any problems. After that running the optimization or registry scan stop at the same hkey location and report the same number of errors. However, FYI, a copy of System Mechanic is on the computer but not running as the security program.

I have left the optimization program running overnight and it greets me in the morning with the same hkey location and the same number of errots as when I went to bed.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Dennis

If you are no longer going to use System Mechanic, why not uninstall it to see if it makes a difference?

The only other suggestion I have at this time would be to reinstall NU16.

After getting back to my laptop, I had another thought.

Check your settings for the registry scan. Under Settings - Registry be sure you have the 'Generate scan logs as part of registry cleaning'  enabled. Then you can view the logs to see if there is an indication of what is stopping the scans.

Also try unchecking the 'Automatically resolve all Registry problems' to see if the scan will complete.

I see no option for creating a Rescue disc.

Can you start Windows in Safe Mode? If so try running the Disk Doctor from Recovery - Repair Drives. Choose the drive you want to check and then choose the last option to Check Partition Structure, and Perform on Reboot.

If you cannot start Windows at all, you may have some malware causing the problem. I would suggest you sign up at one of the free Malware Removal sites below. They also have the tools to help with Windows system problems. Do not try to do anything on your own as it could make things harder for the Malware Removal expert at that site to help you. Choose one and stay there until your system is clean.

1-click optimization erases shortcuts

i put shortcuts to frequently accessed files on my taskbar. For instance, if I right click on the Word Perfect icon, I can quickly accessed shortcuts I have put there. Every Monday, after 1-click optimization has run, all my shortcuts disappear. I don't want to clutter my desktop with these shortcuts, everything has been working just fine until utilities upgraded to 16. Previous versions didn't mess about with my taskbar.  I am using Utilities 16 with Windows 7.

CHKDSK Check Disk keeps running every time on startup- have Utilities and also have NIS 20.5.0.28

all has been fine, then I ran all the stuff on Utilities.  Registry check and so on.  Next day and for the last week CHKDSK wants to check files on C drive at startup, before the desktop comes up.    It says hit any key to cancel so I do - but I did let it run the scan several times.   I also went to my C drive properties and ran the full  thing to check the drive and repair errors.  No errors came up.  I am assuming the Norton Utilities or NIS 20.5.0.28 is causing the problem.   Anyone else have this and a solution?  I am ready to put my whole computer back to factory image but if Norton is the problem this won't resolve it.     I have the same NIS on two other computers and no issues.  Don't have the Utilities on those though. :smileyfrustrated:

I feel your pain. I have had a similar problem with another non-Norton utility. FWIW, uninstalling the program that caused it failed to correct the issue. Eventually it stopped on it's own. So re-imaging your disk may be premature

Perhaps it's being caused by a change in some registry value that someone with more technical knowldge than mine may be able to assist you in correcting.

I know it's a time consuming pain, but unless you frequently restart your PC there are worse things than assuring the integrity of your disk at every start-up. I'd give it some time to see if it stops without further intervention by you.

Try running the Repair drives from Norton Utilities. See if that stops the scans.

NPE 4.3.5 Crashes on XP-Sp3 computer with SSE only CPU Instructions

$

In a separate thread Rajinikanth introduced the new Norton Power Eraser 4.3.5.28.  However, it seems this tool can't run on older computers.  Whereas the prior version(s) runs fine on my XP Pro Sp3 computer with SSE only CPU instruction set, the 4.3.5 version crashes immediately with the following error report in the EventViewer:

Faulting application npe.exe, version 4.3.5.28, faulting module npe.exe, version 4.3.5.28, fault address 0x000d7ac6.

And, as expected, NPE 4.3.5 runs just fine on my Windows 7 computer with SSE2 CPU instructions set.

If the new NPE tool requires SSE2 instructions, is there a way to continue using the old NPE version?  Currently the update seems to be mandatory.

Please Norton/Symantec, can we get some clarity here.  This looks very much like the problem experienced with other recent updates, which made me abandon NAV on my old computer (in favor of avast).  Thanks in advance for a clear to the point reply directly from Norton/Symantec Support.  :smileyhappy:

This is what happens when you are playing with matches...

...., by the way Symantec should have tested it with older XP machines and CPU combinations before release or advise users with particular CPU combinations/instructions.

Cheers!,
